Like a dream: sedation in dental treatment

A woman is afraid of dentists.

Fear of dental treatment is called dentophobia — and this is not just fear, which can be suppressed by a couple of valerian tablets. In dentofobia, a person experiences panic, trembling, palpitation — this greatly complicates the process of treatment. The clinic of aesthetic dentistry PRIZMA applies in its practice the method of sedation, which allows to carry out procedures while the patient is in a dream.

Sedation — the state of half-drowsiness, caused by mediocomatous method. In this case, the person retains the ability to perform verbal commands. The use of medical sleep does not negate the use of local anesthesia, since even in the half-asleep, pain sensitivity remains. Sedation only suppresses the emotional discomfort associated with the fear of treatment.

To introduce a person into a state of medical sleep, there are different sedative drugs that are administered intravenously. At the same time, consciousness is not depressed, which is even more convenient for the doctor. The application of this method is excellent when several manipulations are necessary at one time. Medication sedation is a completely safe procedure and is easily tolerated.

Preparation for the introduction into medication sleep

Sedation does not require any training. Refrain from food and drinks 3 hours before the procedure, the day before, do not drink alcohol. If you plan to treat your teeth in a dream, then write to the doctor in advance so that the anesthesiologist can consult and make recommendations.

After a medical sleep, a person regains consciousness within 30-40 minutes. After that, a person feels weak, a state of mild drowsiness, dizziness, so driving this day is not recommended.

Preventive dental checkup.

Contraindications to medication sleep

Treatment is not carried out:

  • On a full stomach;
  • With respiratory diseases;
  • With craniocerebral injuries;
  • People with epilepsy;
  • Patients with myasthenia gravis (autoimmune neuromuscular disease).

People with Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, and young children are more prone to tooth damage. This is due to behavioral characteristics and the inability to perform even basic hygiene procedures. In such cases, medication-assisted sleep can be an effective solution for safe and high-quality treatment. We describe in detail how a child is treated under medication-assisted sleep, the indications and stages of the procedure in a separate article on our blog.
