Endocrinologist

Endocrinology is the branch of medicine that deals with the study of metabolic diseases and abnormalities of the endocrine glands that produce the hormones necessary for the body.

Endocrinologist

Hormones produced by the thyroid gland regulate metabolic processes and are also responsible for the development and growth of body tissues. The pancreas produces hormones that regulate sugar levels – glucagon and insulin. The adrenal glands produce hormones that control blood pressure, mineral metabolism and urinary function. But the main ‘conductor’ is the hypophysis. It regulates the functioning of the whole system.

At the PRIZMA Medical Centre in Kyiv, an endocrinologist diagnoses, treats and prevents diseases related to hormonal imbalance.

Most often, people come for a consultation with an endocrinologist on the recommendation of other specialists: a neurologist, a gynecologist or a general practitioner. After all, any abnormalities in the endocrine system are linked to the functioning of other systems in the human body.

In the case of endocrine dysfunction, a timely and competent diagnosis is essential. An accurately diagnosed and correctly prescribed treatment will prevent the development of the different chronic diseases.

When should you consult an endocrinologist?

If you have the following symptoms for a long time:

  • general weakness, sleepiness or rapid fatigue;
  • irritability, anxiety, tearfulness, depression, apathy or mood changes;
  • worsening of memory and difficulties in concentrating;
  • weight gain or loss in a short period of time;
  • severe hair loss, brittle nails;
  • frequent urination in conjunction with a feeling of thirst and dry mouth;
  • a “lump” sensation in the throat;
  • trembling inside the body, or trembling in the legs or arms;
  • irregular heart rhythm, high blood pressure, increased heart rate;
  • bone or joint pain;
  • increased sweating.

Be definitely recommended to consult an endocrinologist!

Any of the above-mentioned symptoms are not necessary an indication of an endocrine system disorder, but a good endocrinologist can help determine the cause of such conditions.

It is also important to have an appointment with an endocrinologist for women who are planning a pregnancy, because a correct hormonal balance is essential for the successful carrying of a healthy child.

Diseases treated by an endocrinologist

An endocrinologist diagnoses and treats the following diseases:

  • thyroid abnormalities (hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyrotoxicosis, goitre);
  • parathyroid glands abnormalities;
  • obesity, metabolic syndrome;
  • diabetes mellitus;
  • diabetes insipidus;
  • adrenal gland diseases;
  • hypothalamic syndrome;
  • diseases of the hypothalamus and hypophysis;
  • hyperprolactinemia.

How does the appointment with an endocrinologist take place?

An appointment with an endocrinologist begins with an assessment of the patient’s medical history and complaints, etc. The doctor then carries out a bimanual examination of the thyroid gland. If indicated, he measures sensitivity (vibratory, tactile, temperature, pain and discriminatory), determines reflexes with a neurological hammer and measures blood glucose levels.

If indicated, additional tests may be assigned: ultrasound elastography, Doppler sonography, Electrocardiography, radioisotope examination, reflexometry.

After the disease has been diagnosed, an endocrinologist develops a medication plan, which may include the administration of hormones, vitamins, etc. Patients with endocrine abnormalities are usually prescribed a special diet and moderate physical activity.
