Osteopathy in dentistry

Osteopathy in dentistry

Osteopathy is a relatively new direction in medicine for Ukraine, and not all specialists, who call themselves osteopaths, have sufficient knowledge and practice that can only be obtained in specialized medical institutions.

Osteopathic correction is a manual effect on the body in order to eliminate pathological biomechanical fixation in the joints, relieve tension in the muscles and normalize the function of internal organs. In dentistry, ostheopathy is used to correct the interconnection between the
dentoalveolar, osteomuscular systems and the whole organism in general.

In the medical center «PRIZMA» qualified dentists and osteopath work in tight tandem, which allows to make a complex approach to the treatment, considering the human body as a whole.

Organism is a unified system

In our body, everything is interconnected  from the top of the head to the tips of the toes. But practically, no one realizes that a misalignment in the hip joint or muscle spasms can entail changes in the position of the spine, which in turn provokes problems with the teeth. And vice versa — improper prosthetics, orthodontic correction or even an incorrect filling in the tooth can cause a problem of balance in the body.

Missing teeth

Each tooth performs its own function, to which it is programmed. Front teeth (incisors) are intended for grasping and biting off food. Canines — perform a tearing and holding function. Back teeth (molars) make chewing movements. If the front or back teeth are lost, the chewing load in the oral cavity is transferrwed, and this situation can lead to abrasion, mobility and even to loss of the remaining teeth. If you lose molars and delay with the prosthetic treatment, the entire chewing load will transfer on the front teeth. After a while, these teeth can be attrited and become mobile, as well as other symptoms appear:

  • tension and pain in the neck
  • headache
  • back pain
  • migraine.

Therefore, it is important not only to eliminate these unpleasant sensations with the help of osteopathic correction, but also to provide the dental treatment in addition.

Implantation and prosthetics

The aim of prosthetic work on implants or other types of prostetics is to restore the appropriate height of dentition. Accordingly, the temporomandibular joint is usually involved in the pathological process. In order to avoid or eliminate the existing pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint due to tooth loss, osteopathic correction should be performed before and during the prosthetic work.

Braces

Orthodontic treatment is necessary in cases of malocclusion. In such cases a patient already has pathological changes in the temporomandibular joint and in the dentoalveolar system in general. It  is important to perform an osteopathic correction before the braces are installed into the mouth in order to restore the correct relationship between the dental jaws and the temporomandibular joint.

During orthodontic treatment, the bones of the facial skull and the temporomandibular joint are     under severe stress, which affects the entire body. Therefore, it is important to carry out an osteopathic correction during the orthodontic treatment to exclude such negative factors as:

  • clicks in the joint
  • pain in the neck
  • headache
  • dysfunction of temporomandibular joint
  • irritability
  • difficulty with attention concentrating.

This is only a part of connections between osteopathy and dentistry. Before any dental treatment it is recommended to have a consultation of osteopath. The qualified specialist will perform an osteopathic correction if necessary and will be connected with the patient at all stages of the further dental treatment. This approach will make the dental treatment the most effective and integrated into the whole organism.
