Why Do You Need Prevention Devices

The purpose of prevention devices is to prevent the development of teeth and jaw abnormalities and deformations affecting the factors producing the development of pathological occlusion

Risk factors of incorrect occlusion development:

• Bad habits (long using of dummy, sucking of fingers and other objects (pen, pencil, etc.), biting lower or upper lip, laying tongue between the teeth etc.).
• Dysfunctions (mouth breath, incorrect swallowing).
• Pre-time loss of first teeth.

They are manufactured either individually or in the laboratory (standardized).

Types of prevention devices

There is a lot of devices, and the selection depends on the clinical case. Among others, to prevent bad habits and normalize the functions removable vestibular plates are often used. They may be worn in the early childhood,  from 3 through 6 years old. The following results can be achieved by means of such devices:

• Dishabituating a child to suck fingers;
• Increasing the mouth muscles tonus;
• Changing the type of breath from the mouth into the nose;
• Correcting tongue position;
• Eliminating an open occlusion and speech defects.

In case of pre-time loss of the first teeth it is important to save the space for cutting the permanent teeth. In the area of the extracted tooth the growth of bone tissue stops and the adjacent teeth may move to the empty space. Therefore there is no space for cutting the permanent tooth and the occlusion is impaired. To avoid these troubles, preventive orthodontological devices are used to safe the space.

Depending on the clinical case you may wear:

• Removable devices with artificial tooth instead of the lost one.
• Non-removable devices (a ring is fixed with cement on the tooth on the one side from the missing tooth, a special  bracing goes out of it resting on the tooth on the other side from the missing one) thus saving the place for cutting the permanent tooth. As soon as the permanent tooth has cut, the device is removed.
