What is sinus lift

Sinus lift (bone grafting) is a stimulation of increasing the bone tissue volume by lifting the sinus floor mucosa and replanting of osteoplastic material to create the thickness for the implant installation in the area of upper jaw molars.

Anatomical features of upper jaw

Maxillofacial area has a number of features in the structure of bone tissue. Thus, the upper jaw is special in that it has in its composition a large cavity – the maxillary sinus (maxillary sinus cavity), which occupies almost the entire body of the upper jaw. From inside, the maxillary sinus is filled with air and covered with mucous membrane. When the mucous membrane inflamed, it is called sinusitis. Between the roots of the upper posterior teeth and the maxillary sinus there is a layer of bone tissue (the lower bone wall of maxillary sinus). It is very thin, so in the case of damage to the molars of the upper jaw, complicated by the development of caries, endodontic treatment of teeth may penetrate into the cavity of the maxillary sinus. If these teeth are lost there is a need of implantation, which success depends on the height of the bone from the lower edge of the upper jaw to the sinus floor. In 70% of cases of dental implants in the molar area of the upper jaw there is a need of lift surgery (for the Latin “sinus” – “cavity” and the English “to lift”).

Operation techniques

Closed sinus lift – is performed when the bone height is not less than 7-8 mm. It is a gentle method, since the sinus floor moves through the bed of the implant. Opened sinus lift – is performed when the bone height is less.
